When they're forced to whittle down the crew, the aged & barely able to survive the liftoff doctor chooses himself as 1 that should survive. His sperm count is probably low and if he survives the landing on the planet to father any children, we wont live to raise them. Also, due to his condition, energy will be spent tending to his needs as he ages and gets enfeebled

So older guys aren't allowed to get any? Men in their 90's can father children.

Their plan was to propagate the human race. The doctor could have simply created semen samples to send down to the planet instead of his ailing self. And a younger man who would help change the children's diapers instead of the doctor who will be needing his diaper changed too
