Emma question

So Emma kissed Anthony Newly and he sang a love song about her. And then towards the end, it seems she is in love with the doctor. Do you think the screenwriters forgot that they were building the Newly-Emma love story in the middle of the picture and then all of a sudden had her in love in Dolittle? I don't get it.

reply

I think that basically she truly developed fellings for Dolittle. The kiss with Matthew was a spur of the moment thing because she was excited about saying yes to going on the trip for the great pink sea snail. I don't think it was because she had genuine feelings for Matthew. Just the way I see it.

reply

I assumed she was using Anthony just to get on the ship. :B

Maybe that's why they ended up cutting "Where are the Words" and her part of "Beautiful Things" out of the movie? Because her sudden affection for the good doctor toward the end of the film would make it seem like a copout/cheat in the audience's eyes after all the buildup toward an Emma/Matthew pairing.

But then, that's just me speculating aloud.

I believe the Newley character was gay and that's why Emma had to change her target to the older Dr.

According to PICTURES AT A REVOLUTION, which chronicles the making of the film, the original script called for Emma and Matthew to be a romantic pairing.

After some of the scenes had been filmed (such as Tony Newley singing "Where Are the Words" to a sleeping Samantha Eggar), Rex Harrison decided he wanted to be the love interest. To ensure Harrison would not quit the film again as he had before lensing had begun, the producers relented and asked the script be changed.

A shame really.

Ha! I read that book but forgot about this backstory. Sounds believable, given Harrison's insufferable douche-iness. It came off as very odd that Emma was set up with Newley then ended up w/ Harrison. But the whole film came off as odd.

Poor Samantha-from ''The Collector'' to this to horror movies. I'll bet when it was filming, she was yet another in the long line of performers who said: ''Who do I have to **** to get off this picture?''

reply

Emma was never in love with Matthew; he was smitten with her, but it was completely unreciprocated/unrequited. She only kisses him out of gratitude for finding a way to get her on the ship.

He carries illegal weapons, drives fast cars, and wears clothes obviously designed by a homosexual.
