I always crack up when I watch this film and the scene comes up where Richard (Van Dyke) goes to a drive-in restaurant and orders a hamburger, fries, and a soda and his bill is something like sixty-three cents...boy those were the good old days!
Some things are far more expensive today-even adjusted for inflation while other things like travel are far less expensive. Their house would be 15-20 times that amount today and his cool 1967 Buick Riviera sold brand-new for $4,500.00. I multiply everything by 8-10 1967 dollars to get today's prices.
Thanks to Nixon, we're off the gold standard and have a fiat currency. Since the banknotes have nothing backing them up, the government is free to print more money since they don't have to purchase more gold. The destruction of our currency should scare everyone. If you have savings in your bank, as inflation rises, the money devalues.
