The hanging at the very beginning

What was the point of that? To show what was in store for the whole Dirty Dozen if they didn't participate?

Big deal, hang them all anyway, they did the crime so they should do the hang around.

reply

It's purpose was to motivate Major Reisman to help them escape that fate.

reply

The dirty dozen mission was not his idea.

reply

Attending the hanging was not his idea either.

I responded to your comment that you think it motivated him to do a mission to help death row inmates get off. It, the mission was never his idea in the first place and it was not really optional for him to do it. He was ordered to do it.

reply

Yes, he was ordered to witness the hanging and to perform the mission. But there was still justification in providing him with motivation, so that he would do a good job.
