Question about the final scene

I don't get why the 3 survivors were so bitter against the officers.

Easy...Generals Worden & Denton (Borgnine & Webber) were prepared to string up the dozen at the start of the movie for being criminals. Now...at the end of the movie, these same two faced brass hats are telling them with straight faces & total hypocrisy that the Army 'needs more guys' like them....no wonder, Wladislaw felt he could make a habit of killing Generals.

The survivors were also told they were being sent back into active duty, rather than going home for their efforts.

OK, I must have missed that nuance...I assumed they were gonna be 'in hospital' for a while.
