ON DVD MGM MIDNITE MOVIES SEPTEMBER 11

MGM (as distributed by Fox) has finally announced a batch of Midnite Movies double features for release on September 11. These will include: RETURN OF DRACULA/THE VAMPIRE (John Beal) (new hi-def transfers), THE BEAST WITH A MILLION EYES/PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES (new hi-def transfer for PHANTOM), PHARAOH'S CURSE/CURSE OF THE FACELESS MAN, THE BEAST WITHIN/THE BAT PEOPLE, KONGA/YONGARY, MONSTER FROM THE DEEP. One the same date, MGM will release Roger Corman and Vincent Price box sets of previously released titles. As mentioned earlier, MGM will also release single Midnite Movies of WITCHFINDER GENERAL and FOOD OF THE GODS. More details and cover art to follow soon!

it is quite possible that an actual widescreen 35mm print of the film for the US version no longer exist.

The german version (dvd) for the film does offer it in its 2:35:1 aspect ratio but it is also 15 mins shorter and in German. They do have the US version as a bonus but it is the same version we have always had here (pan/scan)

In fact I would love to see an actual Korean dvd release of this dilm and I am suprised one has not yet been made (or that we know of)

A widescreen print of the US version has reportedly run on cable. I've also heard now that the DVD is widescreen. (Don't know about anamorphic.) Guess I'll find out for sure tomorrow!

do you what channel allegedly ran it? Well either way report if the mgm disc is in a true 2:35:1.

2.35 and anamorphic. The colors are beautiful, too.

In the 79-80 minute range. Same old US version, it would seem.

According to an interview with the DVD's producer, the Korean version doesn't seem to be in existance, not even in Korea.

"We were in touch with whoever had taken over for the original production company, and it may well be that they did not know for sure what elements they had. We tried as much as we could to find the Korean YONGARY. And again, sometimes there are problems because of the language barrier, but we were told that it was terminated. That how they said it… terminated, y’know? It is kind of surprising when that happens, but sometimes a production company is really small and they just can’t afford the storage, or the company is sold and things get lost. These things happen, unfortunately.

I’ve since heard that there are some materials in the Korean Film Archives, but it doesn’t even sound like a complete original negative [see the main article above for more info]. And that was long after we had worked on the film, and you sometimes have to play the hand that’s been dealt you."
