years? I remember being surprised that they even had a film industry that would dare compete with Japan/Godzilla

They rebooted 'Yongary' in 1999 (on IMDB under the title 'Reptile'). After that, I'm not sure. I'll take the question to the Monster Movie boards.

A user on the Monster Movies board gave me the title 'Gwoemul', AKA 'The Host,' from 2006. Maybe that's the one you're thinking of.
