Japanese tanks

American Sherman tank models (with star markings rather than rising sun)used by Japanese Army. Hoorah!

The movie was actually made and set in Korea, so it might not be so unusual to find them still employing American tanks that were sold or given to the Korean military during the Korean war. The Israeli and Yugoslavian militaries were still using Sherman tanks as late as the early 1970s.

That said, one of the reasons I love kaiju films are the cool military toys. I'd love to have one of the prop tanks from any of the genre, but unfortunately, most of them were destroyed during filming.

I noticed most of the cars were American from the late 50's/early 60's.

Same situation as the tanks: the U.S. exported cars to South Korea from immediately after the Korean war, and the exports gradually trickled off as South Korean industry improved.

They weren't Shermans. They looked more like the M41 Bulldog, though I may be off there, too. The turrets have a flared-out section at the back, which contained storage, I think.

These were probably off-the-shelf models by Japanese model companies like Bandai or Tamiya.

Also, it wasn't the Japanese army. This is set in Korea. It's the Army of the Republic of Korea.
