Brando, a method actor, found it very difficult to adjust to Chaplin's direction, which called for the actors to mimic his actions exactly. Despite this, he did consider Chaplin the supreme genius and respected his every wish on the set, from all accounts I've read.

In Charlie Chaplin's biography by Jerome Epstein, he says that Sophia didn't like Marlon, probably because she and her husband,Carlo Ponti wanted Sophia to get top billing for the movie but Brando wouldn't let her, not even in her home of Italy. Also, when they were getting ready for their kissing scene, he told her she had a long hair in her nose. She was furious.

"You think I was telling you the truth? Maybe...maybe."

Brando says in his biography that Chaplin was very cruel to his actor son on the set, and was constantly yelling at him and humiliating him in front of the entire crew.

Chaplin was a bit of a....screwball.
