What was Dragline in for?

Is it even stated in the movie? In the book?

Also, i'm wondering where is Dennis Hopper? I didn't notice him, must have been a very small part.

And in the end right before Luke is made to dig a ditch, they state that there's "a few days left" or something like that. Did they mean he only had a few days left of his sentence? Or did i mishear that entirely?

As far as Dennis Hopper, he's Babalugats, a character seen through much of the film. If you do an image search for Dennis Hopper Cool Hand Luke, you'll find lots of stills from the film. If you do a search for Dennis Hopper Cool Hand Luke YouTube, you'll find various video clips from the film with him. For example, he's in this clip of the car wash scene starting at 1:13.

I don't remember it being mentioned why Dragline is at the prison camp.

I don't remember the context of the "few days left" line you're referring to, but if it's when they make him repeatedly dig a hole and fill it in until he breaks, it wouldn't be referring to him having only a few days left on his sentence because he's had a significant amount of time added for his escape attempts.

A few days left until he breaks I think

Also, what exactly happened in the poker game? How is it possible to win with a worthless hand, what kind of poker were they playing?

reply

Yeah-if your looking for Hopper judging by his look in later years, you'd might pass him by-though he didn't have much dialouge he is present in almost every bunk house scene-Dragline must not be in for something that seroous, cause he mentions screwing up his release date when he joins Luke on his last break-
Luke was not gonna see the free world for sometime-cause of all the added time. But I do beleive his original sentence was short and counted in months not years

When Drag and Luke are running around in the circle before Luke eats the eggs, Drag mentions that he stole and told lies. He also mentioned that he loved his neighbor... and his neighbor's wife. I assume he was in for theft and possibly for adultery.

As for the poker game, Luke bluffed. He kept raising every time Coco bet, which led Coco to believe that Luke had a really good hand. Finally, when it was down to just the two of them, Coco folded; so Luke won the hand by default. He didn't have to show his cards at that point; and Drag really shouldn't have turned them over for everybody to see.

reply

Dragline shouldn't have, but that's just why he did it. It's a show of dominance. Sure it gives him more respect for Luke, but he's completely running the show at that point.

Sometimes "worthless" can be a pretty cool hand...

It's called "bluffing" and it's a part of poker, all kinds of poker, not to mention a part of life.

reply

In the book it says Dragline was arrested in Miami for stealing women's fur coats from a Department Store at night.

reply

They were playing 5 card draw. One card face down and four up. Luke had a king as one of the up cards and was bluffing as though his down card was also a king which would have been a better hand than the other player. The bluff worked because the player folded and Dragline turned the card over expecting to see a king. Instead, he had nothing. Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.
