Society Red

What was Society Red (J.D. Cannon) in for?

reply

In the book he was a Boston businessman arrested for writing hot checks in Miami. And he was called a "paper hanger" by Koko.

Yeah he stuck out and probably the only prisoner there with more than a 10th grade education.

Passing bad checks is mentioned by dragline, which seems to imply that he is there for that reason. His nickname does suggest this type of white collar crime.

When he loses the "50 eggs" bet and has to pay up, he says, "I don't suppose you'd take a check?".

Despite my friends seldom laughing at that line in my presence, I've always considered it one of the funniest in the picture.

Most great films deserve a more appreciative audience than they get.
