Blue dress

I'm still puzzled about the blue dress situation. The doc's lover phoned the dry cleaner, just before they both left for the airport, asking for the used laundry to be picked up the next day. Why was the dress not with the rest of the laundry? I thought she came back from the airport and slipped it in with the rest of the stuff.
I must confess that I watched this late at night -I was yawning and didn't give full concentration. I think that in general it was a good introduction to what would turn into my favourite series!

The blue dress was delivered with the rest of the laundry.Lt.Columbo was there at the time too.Joan put it in the bag that was outside the door.After her so called argument with Dr.Flemming on the airplane.

The problem consisted on Joan forgetting to put the gloves on the dry cleaners' bag as well.

I believe the original poster is asking why the blue dress wasn't returned along with the other items in the laundry bag. I'm wondering too.

I saw it so long ago that I may be mistaken, but that's what I remember.

The lover put the wife's blue dress in the laundry bag with the rest of the laundry, but she forgot to include the gloves. I think that that was a problem, because Columbo had already got hold of the laundry bag with all its contents when the husband returned home or when the lover realised her mistake.

But the laundryman returned the blue dress by itself, without any other garments. Why was it seperated from the rest of the dirty clothes?

It didn't come back by itself. The delivery dork had the dress and a box with the other items. Both were set on the bar, but only the dress was examined up close.
