Why No Elvis/Shelley Duet?

Why didn't Shelley Fabares get to sing a duet with Elvis in "Clambake"? After all, she had a smash hit with "Johnny Angel" and was a recording artist in her own right. Was it because she was largely a "studio creation" who really couldn't sing or was it Colonel Parker's power brokering that prevented Elvis from having to "compete" with another singer?

They sort of sang a duet in Girl Happy. The song "Spring Fever" was sang by the guys and the girls while they were driving to Fort Lauderdale. I have heard Shelley many times say she did not have a great voice and that "Johnny Angel" was a great song and she had help with background singers.

The Colonel from what I've read was NOT eager to cast Elvis opposite girls who sang, largely based upon his experiences with Ann-Margret on "Viva Las Vegas". If you notice rarely were leading ladies allowed to sing with Elvis, even if they were singers themselves, the exceptions being the aforementioned Ann-Margret, Nancy Sinatra, Joan O'Brien (given a piece of the final song in "It Happened At the World's Fair"), Donna Douglas (dubbed), and Marianna Hill (whose character was a singer in "Paradise Hawaiian Style" so it made sense)!

It would have been great to have had at least one. What a waste of an opportunity.

I agree entirely. But, Shelley HATED singing on film because she was so embarrassed by her lack of talent. The music producer would do alot of overdubbing, and re-recording on her recordings. She tells in an interview about how background singers (Darlene Love & The Blossoms?) would make cracks during her recording sessions. But when it was all finished, most people loved her records. She may have made a request not to have to sing a song in this movie. I've met Shelley, and she is truly the sweetest celeb I've met.

I have two of her studio albums on my iPod, she had limited range, but I don't think she was a bad singer at all. Hearing her sing with Elvis would of been a joy.
