An underrated Elvis comedy

This has always been one of my favorite Elvis movies. I loved Shelley Fabares and the guy who played Elvis' dad, even though sitting through the Tom Wilson guy trying to sing is pretty excruciating. I know Elvis wasn't all that interested in the script, like a lot of his mid-'60s films, and that he had a lot going on at the time this was filmed, but I think it's one of his funniest movies, along with Follow That Dream. Clever plot.

Good movie, I just wish they would have recorded it in Miami and not in the state of California...there are no mountains in Florida people.

Much of the secondary filming was done in Florida with Elvis doubles.

I agree. This is my second favorite Elvis movie next to Girl Happy. The guy who played Elvis' dad was James Gregory, the finest "character actor" ever. Tom Wilson was played by "Sugarfoot" Will Hutchins. He was one of Elvis' best sidekicks. Shelley Fabares is also gorgeous as ever.

I am a big fan of Elvis, but this is not one of my favorites of the movies that he made. I prefer, "King Creole" and "Loving You" and several others before this one. JMHO.

The one thing I especially DO like about this movie though, (the song he sings in the boat shop while watching Shelley Fabares walk away)-- "You Don't Know Me".

It's one of my all time favorite Elvis songs and always will be...

God Bless the King!

Be well...

I also like this movie, a lot. Shelley was in two of his movies at least. Was "You Don't Know Me" written especially for this movie?

Did anyone notice that when he picked her up in the sports car he didn't bother to load her luggage? She was waiting for a cab to go home and she just blithely gets in the sports car (belonging to someone else, she thinks)
and rides off with him with no thought of leaving behind all her belongings.

TCM channel aired it today. Just looking at Elvis and realizing that only 5 years later he would be dead was sobering at best. They don't make these light fluffy movies any more. Too bad. Now movies are all violence and sex and foul language. WWET (what would Elvis think) about todays movies?

I always liked Follow That Dream.

This was actually 10 years before he died, and there was a big to-do over how fat he supposedly was during filming, but I still think he looks pretty good here. And while it's safe to say Elvis preferred his James Dean-type roles in King Creole, Wild in the Country, et., I can still enjoy these too. It's just a shame he let Parker roadblock all the serious roles he was offered after the early '60s.

And "You Don't Know Me" was definitely not written for Clambake. It was originally recorded by Eddy Arnold, and Ray Charles had a big hit with it on his first Modern Sounds in Country & Western album. Mickey Gilley also had a hit with it later on the country charts, Charlie Rich recorded it, and it's actually one of the most widely covered standards ever. A great song, although I've always preferred Elvis' studio recording to the one they used in the film.

The other song from this movie I really like is "The Girl I Never Loved," which I've never heard anyone else perform. It's definitely one of his best original soundtrack songs from that period. And it's worth noting that the horrible "Confidence" (with young Corbin Bernson) was one of Andy Kaufman's favorite songs.

Spyder... Yep I made an error . I just went back in to correct it and ahah.. You caught me. And yes, Parker ruled with an iron hand,,,

I did like his movies. TCM had several on today. He was the King and will be forever. If there was no Elvis, there would be no Beatles, etc. I just wish he had taken better care of himself. Just what would he be like at 72?

I also caught it on TCM. It wasn't as bad as I thought, and Elvis was his usual likable self, but I've seen better 1960s Presley vehicles. (FUN IN ACAPULCO, IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLDS FAIR).

Shelley Fabares is also gorgeous as ever.

THAT was one of the better things to watch about this movie! With this and RIDE THE WILD SURF (1964), I'd take Shelley over Annette any time, as the queen of the 1960s bikini beauties!

BTW, Shelley is Annette's best friend. They have been since they worked together on the Mickey Mouse Club serial entitled Annette. Shelley was a cutie and is the sweetest celeb I've met.
