It exemplifies/spoofs the whole "sex-and-violence" appeal of Bond movies:

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"
Just about every one ends up dying including the cavalry I guess.
shareRemember, this was during the Cold War, and many people simply assumed the world was going to blow up sooner or later anyway. It was kind of a cathartic way of dealing with it. Dr. Strangleove was an obvious example, but I think the lurking shadow of nuclear holocaust informed most art and music in the 60's and 70's, sometimes in very subtle ways.
