Why did Omar slap sophia?

Just watched this myself, really enjoyed it. He slapped her for breaking dishes.

I think it was because the dishwashing contest was supposed to be a sure way for her, a peasant, to win. When she lost, he was so disappointed and angry that he slapped her. He was a hot headed Spaniard.

I had such high hopes for this film. . .I was VASTLY disappointed. Sophia and Omar were both beautiful but what an awful movie!
