When a despondent Sophia/Isabella walks to the sea...

...to commit suicide I half expected to see George Lazenby come running up to the rescue----waitaminute, that's the opening of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" with Diana Rigg, filmed two years later.

Inspiration for the Bond scene, perhaps?

Furthermore, it seems that Sophia Loren's illiterate beauty (the Isabella character) and Georges Wilson's portly, eccentric palace chef character (Monzu) were precursors to Raquel Welch's ditzy beauty Constance and Spike Milligan's portly, eccentric M. Bonacieux character in "The Three Musketeers" filmed by Richard Lester in 1973. Both films take place in Europe of the 1600s.
