Gian Maria Volonte is better in this than he was under Leone.

I guess I can understand that since this is a much more political film.

disagree,
so much more engaging in "for a few dollars more,"
he's a bit of a pussy in this flick

I just saw this movie for the first time. There are some similarities to this film and Leone's later "Duck You Sucker" (aka "A Fistful of Dynamite"). I found I enjoyed "A Bullet for the General" more than "Duck", but not as much as Leone's other 4 westerns.

I had only seen Volonte in Fistful of Dollars & For a Few Dollars More. It was nice to see him play something other than a psychotic killer for a change. It was also nice seeing him as a movie's central character. It was a good film.

The role in 'bullet' is more human...who knew he could be so comically effective and lovable? A refreshing change to see him in this kind of role, instead of the psychotics he played under Leone or in "Faccia a Faccia". And by the way, check out "Faccia a Faccia"--probably his most complex spag-western role...a surprisingly nasty character! What a change from El Chuncho.

his acting in this film was tops. its hard to compare it to his roles in the dollars trilogy cause this is a lead role and the central character so it's of course going to be a more meaty part but i agree he's better. his acting when his brother and the general are shot is amazing.
