surprisingly good action scenes

When I watched this I thought it be kinda boring. Maybe a few quick little shooting scenes. But WOW I actually had some really good action in it. Tons of good shootouts and car chases. Was this the first big movie to feature action to this level? I can't think of any before it or even a long time afterward.
