Did anybody else find this movie funny?

I'm pretty sure the writers and producers didn't intend for this to be a comedy but it seemed like it to me. It surprised me because I've seen the "Ipcress File" and that's pretty solid spy thrilling there. Haven't seen the others yet. But I saw this one mainly because of the cast and I saw that Ken Russell directed it, Billy Williams did the cinematography and Richard Rodney Bennett did the music.

Now that I've seen it, I was disappointed. I expected more thrills and more complex characters. The cast did a good job for what they were supposed to do. Ed Begdley gets the prize for the most hilarious villain. I don't think there was a scene he had that I didn't laugh at. Richard Rodney Bennett's score was less than expected, I found it rather loud and intrusive in some scenes.

My favorite things about the movie was Billy Williams cinematography. All of the scenes were shot perfectly. I'm pretty sure that he along with director Ken Russell didn't want to do this movie but they did the best they could with what they had.

How did you manage to think when Francoise Dorleac was smouldering all over the place?

I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be a comedy, if a dark one. Although to be fair, I've never been entirely sure with any of Russell's films how seriously he's taking the enterprise.

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

Funeral in Berlin, where Col Stok makes his first appearance, has a similar number of twists. You can find this in a lot of British films if you look hard enough. All power to you and the O.P. for spotting it. It usually takes me a few views before the irony takes hold and there's plenty of it in this movie. But it isn't just Ken Russell. Deighton wrote it that way.

A lot of it's meant to be funny, trust me.

From the ridiculous Fascist Barn Dance, to Colonel Stock...
