Prostitutes in Film..

Do you think films such as this glamourize prostitution in anyway? Do you think the film has a fair represntation of prostitution? Do you think women do really fantasise about having some sort of secret prostitute life?

reply

All films glamourize their subjects.
Yes, but only that part of the market.
Yes, this is documented.

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

s5143,

May I ask - are you doing a thesis or research on prostitution in film?

If so, do not spoil your bias if this is being statistically analyzed, but I would ask in order to determine gender bias; what sex are you?

From what level of educational background are you posing these questions?

Yours?

To what target audience for your questions?

I didn't think it was glamorized--certainly it wasn't the life of a street hooker in Brooklyn, but at that time period, in Paris--why not? There was nothing glamorous TO ME about sleeping with those nasty guys she slept with. Blech!

reply

i don't think Buñuel meant to glamorize prostitution.. more than a character study.
to me the entire film is pretty much Séverine's dream (?) and what she thought would happen if she went down that road.

It has been said that there is a little wanton in every woman. And another thing, men don't kiss whores on the mouth for the obvivious reason.
