Would You Consider This An Iconic Film?

A friend told me that, if this film were iconic, it would have more imdb votes. Now, I personally don't think that imdb votes play any factor in whether a film's iconic. Rather, I look at how influential it has been and how many interpretations it gives rise to.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Not after seeing 5/6 of it. Dated?

reply

Iconic? Absolutely. Dated, only in so far as such film would be unlikely to be made today. Visually, a woman dressed in YSL's timeless creations for Severine would still turn heads today, for all the right reasons.

reply

Yes, the film is iconic.

Unfortunately, the overall concept of the story is much, much more interesting than anything that's actually shown, or developed.

It kind of makes sex seem tedious...which is an odd accomplishment, in movies.

reply

Yes, the film is iconic.
It certainly captures a notable French "style" of the era, highlighted by costumes designed by Yves Saint Laurent.🐭

reply

yes, I definitely agree with you on that and don't think that imdb votes play any serious factor.

reply

No doubt. It has had so many comments (I don't talk about IMDB), reviews, citations, almost close to none other.

It had an iconic hero, playing exactly how she had to be played (whatever some people in here say). And the topic(s) are covered in a very frank way for 1967. On a deeper level, it is a basic human question since mankind: sexual preferences, connections, man and woman, the lack of ability to communicate to one's partner, day-dreaming, exploitation. And of course, the question of being faithful / unfaithful.
Not that this film gave any answer, but it opens these themes side by side once and for all.

This is one of the first Foreign Language movies that I ever saw. It was 45 years ago and I thought it was lovely. I saw it again when it was reissued in 1995. Now 20 years later, having seen other Bunuel films, I realize that this one is extremely sexist. I don't care to watch women being physically and mentally abused.

Deneuve is, of course, gorgeous, and Genevieve Page is marvelous as the Madam. I just couldn't make it through this time, though. It goes back to the library.

reply

Maybe it's not an iconic film. It was a guilty pleasure. Beautifully filmed, well acted, fiercely original, and morbidly interesting, it still lacks much redeeming value in the overall story.

It gives an interesting perspective on the profession of prostitution. I guess that makes it fascinating.. I'd say Discreet Charm is more iconic but I did enjoy this.
