Why so low rating?

Surely this true masterpiece deserves at least an 8.5. As it's grown on me over the years, I give it a 10 hands down. What's not to love?

reply

I gave it a 10 too, it's one of Bunuel's best movies, which of course means it's one of the best films ever made. Why the low rating? Because this is IMDB where The Shawshank Redemption is considered the greatest cinematic achievement of all time.

Everyone should have the same opinion as you? Why?

reply

It was a solid 4. Well produced, stylized underground movies with A-list actors are still only underground movies. There was nothing compelling, or even interesting about this "masterpiece."

reply

I hardly consider Bunuel to be a maker of so-called underground movies. I gave this a solid 10. A fascinating film, I wish I owned it.

That's what I thought also! Fast forward a few years and I LOVE it for it's fascinating exploration of sexuality and social mores. It's a wonderful exercise in surrealism, dude!

reply

It's not a low rating, though...

What's not to love?
Nothing. We live in a different age, and if it wasn't so boring to repeat and repeat it, movies to day are so far away from movies in those days. And many simply don't get the 'movie as an art' any longer, plus surrealism is a form of art that is totally unfashionable in our days.
The average spectator wants a clear plot, and most of all a 'satisfying' and unambiguous ending.
