How classy was my Wimpy

The thing that always gets me in this film is that although its featuring of a burger bar (at a time when such things were novelty in England) is prophetic, just how "classy" the old Wimpys were compared to the modern burger joints. Alright, it's not the Ritz or Claridges, but you get waitress service, properly cooked burgers etc, and not in cardboard and styrofoam. They probably even gave you a knife and fork too. You even get to order how well done you want your burger to be. (Although the coffee was foul in England until the 90s...)

When the Devil says "I'll cover it in Wimpy Bars" at the end, he was foreseeing an England infested with McDonalds and Burger Kings... but not of the type in the film.

Wimpys still exists and is all of those things, even now.

I know Wimpy's still exists (but only just), but it's no longer waitress service etc, it's cardboard boxes, plastic, and trays.

I can't speak for all of them, but the two I know still have plates and cutlery as well as well as service. It's not what I would call particularly good though!

Well, the modern burger chains are infested with neds (yobs) too!

Wimpy was originally a cafe type place as shown in the film. Then they split into having the sit-down place still but also the McDonalds style fast food places. Sometime in the late 80s/early 90s, they sold the McDonalds style restaurants to Burger King but kept the sit-down places. There was still one in Basingstoke when I lived there.

I do miss a spicy beanburger and toasted teacake from time to time.

There used to be a couple in Edinburgh until several years ago...
