Peter Cook and Dudley Moore - Contrarians?

I always enjoy the dark and thoughtful humor in this movie, with its snappy and witty dialog and excellent comic acting by Cook and Moore. One of the most interesting aspects of this movie is that I always had the impression that many of the themes and moral lessons imparted by the humor and plot are surprisingly conservative and old-fashioned for a movie addressing "sins" in the late 60's.

As it seems that the two lead actors wrote much of the movie script, it appears that they had very interesting opinions and philosophies regarding many issues at a time when the birth control pill, changing roles for women, and other influences were contributing to a much more relaxed and free-spirited attitude toward sex, relationships, and work, etc., in the popular media if not in mainstream society.

I would like to know more about Cook and Moore's views in real life about the subjects addressed in this movie - I suspect that Cook was a contrarian, and I get a strong sense of traditional moral views from this movie, although I have not done an research about what themes and moral points of view Cook intended the audience to glean from the movie. I do know both he and Moore were very intelligent and witty, so I'm sure they were quite interesting people. It's a shame they aren't both still around - their were both unique and very talented people.
