Raquel Welch is hot?

Yes, she has a nice body, but you can find tons of those. Her face was scary and the accent was painful to listen to.

I couldn't agree more. There certainly were women in this film who were:

1. More beautiful
2. Sexier
3. Better actresses

Admittedly, number 3 is hardly surprising. I think the only film I have ever seen that wasn't evidently beyond Raquel Welch's abilities was 'One Million BC'.

reply

Aw, come on, she was quite lovable in Richard Lester's "Three Musketeers", right?

reply

I thought the lovable one in that film was Faye Dunaway.

reply

It's nice that a blind man appreciated her body at least.

reply

In this film? Beyond belief. Compared to other women in 60s films, she was impossibly perfect.

reply

Yeah, maybe it's different times, different women or something. But I don't find Raquel attractive in the least. And her body is a dime a dozen.

Still, fun film.

reply

Ah no. You're completely wrong on the dime a dozen thing. Internet commenters, confusing video game fantasy with reality since 1995...

reply

A dime a dozen? I don't think so.

Either you've never seen a woman's body or you live in a fantasy universe where this sort of body is common. She was built like a brick *beep*

In 1967, when the film was released, she was quite a well known sex symbol and arguably one of the most iconic of her time. 1 Million BC was released in '66 and her famous poster made her world famous and personified lust. She was well cast IMHO. Who do you suggest?

reply

Well, Jane Fonda is quite lovely. Or almost any of the bond girls.

reply

It's all in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Welch was going to be a Bond girl in Thunderball (1965), until her managers put her in Fantastic Voyage instead. I don't see how anyone could not find find her totally hot looking. Even today... for her age.

I think what people who dislike her are missing is that fact. She was a sex-symbol. Regardless of any individual tastes the fact is that everyone would recognize her as representing what is desireable in a woman.

It's kind of like when you see a man doing action films and you don't understand why he's any more 'action-y' than any other actor. But actors have cache. They carry around the weight of previous roles. I went to see Payback with Mel Gibson with my nephew, and he didn't understand why this 'old guy' could beat everyone up. What he's missing is that same factor - the iconic factor where the viewer is meant not just to see the actor as he is, but is meant to see him as the personification of all the tough-guys he ever played.

Similarly Welch is meant to be understood to be gorgeous and sexy whether she's to the viewer's particular taste or not.

A convincing argument. That said, I think she is one of those voluptuous, good-looking women (her features too coarse to be beautiful IMO) who at the same time are quite without sexiness. Though, if you dig her you should check her out when she was a guest star on Spin City, where she played the mother of Richard Kind, on a couple of very funny episodes. She had Richard and his collegues over for lasagna, and the other guys kept asking for more since it meant she had to bend over and get the pan out of the oven.

Raquel Welch is damn hot all the way into her golden years. I love these Internet guys' "super high standards."

reply

SHE WAS PERFECT!

reply

Did they really need to have her take up 1/3 of the poster imagery? She's only in this for about 5 minutes.

SEX SELLS!

Raquel, Ann Margaret, Sophia Loren and Bridget Bardot were pretty much the biggest sex symbols of the late 60s.

Don't forget Annette Funicello. She was Mouseka-stacked.

reply

I think of her more as the Girl Next Door than sex symbol. Although I guess we can add Jane Fonda to the list after she did Barbarella.

reply

Yes, her southern accent was horrendous, and... I don't know if this aspect was intentional or not, but it kind of summed up the whole idea that sin is simultaneously repugnant and irresistable.

The irresistable part was her body, the repugnant part was her voice & everything else (including her acting)!

If that was intentional it was brilliant, if not, then it was a "happy accident".

reply

Funny you mentioned that because that was the vibe I was getting. She was hot and sweet and acted fake and sugary to get what she wanted, as she turned out to be married, she needed an alias.
