Paintings on opening credits

I`m just curious if these were commissioned specifically for the film or perhaps painted by a veteran ?Does anyone know?

I've just received this film from Netflix and I'm watching it right now. I was also struck by the quality of some of the paintings and came here to find out the same thing. Unfortunately, the opening and closing credits give no obvious clue. Sorry!

Damn that's irritating that the artist isn't credited - I rather like those paintings too - slightly Gauguin look to them; he had a bad time on a tropical island too.

Those paintings were indeed beautiful; it's a shame the artist who did them wasn't given any credit in the movie.

There's a signature in the lower right corner of a couple of the paintings, which led me to look within the opening credits themselves. The 2 artists responsible are indeed given credit under "title backgrounds". Michael W. Green and Takashi Tanaka did the paintings, easy enough to know who did which as each painting centers around either Japanese or American subjects.

As an aside I loved the (pre CGI) manner in which director Cornel Wilde segued from the credits to the real life beach scene by having Rip Torn (and another soldier) standing in front of a painted mural in the background then having the camera pan over to the actual beach, talk about resourcefulness!
