40th anniversary restoration and DVD

Reportedly, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the movie,
it's been digitally restored and remastered in HD,
and the result was presented as special screening
at Cannes Film Festival in 2006 with Joanna Shimkus as guest.

I assume French DVD released in May 2007 is the version from this effort.
Although amazon.fr doesn't list any special features,
I'll be very surprised if it actually doesn't have any,
because Japanese 40th anniversary DVD (due July 27)
has hour-long supplements (56 mins).

According to the DVD publisher's website http://www.amuse-s-e.co.jp/bkst/
it will include:

* Interview w/ director Robert Enrico, recorded at the time of the original theatrical release.(10 mins).
* Interview w/ Joanna Shimkus at aforementioned Cannes Film Festival (11 mins).
* Featurette on composer Francois de Roubaix (26 mins).
* Several versions of trailers.
* Cast & crew bios.
* Title-free opening (2 mins).
* Title-free ending (2 mins).

Not up to Criterion-standards, and fans must want more (i.e. where's Delon?),
but they sound good to me.
Maybe French DVD has similar supplements, or even more. (anyone has any info?)

Unfortunately for English-speaking people, it has no English subs/dubbs.

Although this movie has been available on DVD in Japan for a long time
(if my memeory serves, it was actually one of the very first DVDs from this publisher)
the previous edition was merely a recycle of old laserdisc and no supplements but a trailer.
I'm looking forward to see the new edition.

That is very unfortunate for English speakers! I can't understand the decision not to include subs/dubs - it would have stacks of commercial potential in the UK.

Well it is rather unfortunate for English speaking audience not to be able to have this movie either subtitled or dubbed. I personally don't care since I speak French and I also saw beautifully dubbed Russian version, but it would have been great if they at least thought of that part of the world that speaks English only. That part is quite substantial and larger.
I doubt that it would have made a huge splash in US, but I agree that UK viewers are losing this opportunity. This movie is just one of the greatest adventure/love stories ever made, they don't make them like that anymore

Is a US DVD out yet, you think? Amazon only has the film's soundtrack!

I guess one can order this from amazon.fr, but then it will be Region 2 and no English soundtrack. But maybe English SUBTITLES?

Thanks!
