40th anniversary restoration and DVD
Reportedly, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the movie,
it's been digitally restored and remastered in HD,
and the result was presented as special screening
at Cannes Film Festival in 2006 with Joanna Shimkus as guest.
I assume French DVD released in May 2007 is the version from this effort.
Although amazon.fr doesn't list any special features,
I'll be very surprised if it actually doesn't have any,
because Japanese 40th anniversary DVD (due July 27)
has hour-long supplements (56 mins).
According to the DVD publisher's website http://www.amuse-s-e.co.jp/bkst/
it will include:
* Interview w/ director Robert Enrico, recorded at the time of the original theatrical release.(10 mins).
* Interview w/ Joanna Shimkus at aforementioned Cannes Film Festival (11 mins).
* Featurette on composer Francois de Roubaix (26 mins).
* Several versions of trailers.
* Cast & crew bios.
* Title-free opening (2 mins).
* Title-free ending (2 mins).
Not up to Criterion-standards, and fans must want more (i.e. where's Delon?),
but they sound good to me.
Maybe French DVD has similar supplements, or even more. (anyone has any info?)
Unfortunately for English-speaking people, it has no English subs/dubbs.
Although this movie has been available on DVD in Japan for a long time
(if my memeory serves, it was actually one of the very first DVDs from this publisher)
the previous edition was merely a recycle of old laserdisc and no supplements but a trailer.
I'm looking forward to see the new edition.
