Joanna Shimkus

Just curious.

Did she actually speak French well enough for this kind of film, or did she have to be dubbed by another actress?

reply

She spoke French (raised in Montreal). She even recorded a French pop song with Sacha Distel, a French-language version of "Something Stupid."

Ah, thank you, good to know that was her voice in the film. I didn't know she was a singer. Her wiki profile doesn't say so.

Nova Scotia is a part of Montreal I take it.

There's a reason I asked this question: I thought non-English European films back then had a policy. That policy being that actors whose accent does not match the country the film is from has to have his or her voice dubbed by someone else.

Sicilian actor Adolfo Celi had his voice dubbed by another actor in the Italian versions of so many of his Italian films for example.

Joanna was born in Nova Scotia, but raised in Montreal, which is a completely different province. My father was raised in Montreal as a Francophone; it's very common.

Joanna went to Paris at 19 and became a fashion model. Her accent was fine.

Jacqueline Bisset and Jane Birkin both went over to France from England and made a string of movies as non-native speakers of French. As far as I know, their voices weren't dubbed over.
