Did Steve ever find out who Racer X really was or was it ever revealed?

Speed never found out that X was really Rex. No one on the show found out who he was.
That is correct in the US series. In the Japanese series, Racer X unmasks himself moments before he dies, revealing his secret identity to Speed and Pops. The episode including Rex's death was never aired on US TV - in fact, it may have never been dubbed.

Umm...No. That's an interesting story, but it never happened in the series. I have the Japanese "Mach GoGoGo" DVD sets, and can confirm that Racer X did not die, and that there are no episodes that weren't brought over here. The Japanese run has 52 episodes, just like the U.S. version. And episode #52, shown here as "Race Around the World Part II," has the same scenes we saw here with Racer X helping Speed by leaving him some gasoline during the race and watching over him from afar during the final victory parade. No scenes where Racer X is shot and killed, no unmasking before Speed and Pops. Like I said, an interesting story, but it never happened.

Darn series didn't play fair IMO. If they were bringing it to an end anyway, why not end it with a happy reunion, instead of Rex claiming he can't return home for no discernible reason and remaining apart? Lousy let-down. (Especially since, apparently, the original Japanese manga book DID end with a reunion!)
I remember Speed running after Racer X because he knew he was his brother.
