Who is The Prisoner?

Is number six John Drake from Secret Agent Man?

reply

Yes and no. According to the producer of the show, the answer is yes. He went so far as to let novels be written about that fact. Patrick McGoohan swore up and down there was no connection. I guess it depends on your point of view.

reply

It was subtly implied a few times in the show that it was John Drake.Allegedly in private McGoohan admitted to his stunt double that it is John Drake, but publicly denied it,more than likely because the creator of the character of John Drake (Ralph Smart IIRC) would had to have been paid royalties.

reply

No 6 is actually a kind of everyman.

reply

nephihaha has it exactly right. The series may have initially intended No. 6 to be Drake, but as it went from the literal to the allegorical, it quickly became clear that No. 6 was each & every one of us -- at least as we could be, if we had the strength & determination to resist the infinite layers of control & persuasion that the world imposes on us. And of course the most subtle & powerful layers of control & persuasion are those within our own minds.

reply

MacGoohan didn't have rights for Danger Man, so it might have been seen as a copyright vio. So he denied everything, staying in character BTW.

Iirc, in the penultimate episode where McKern is regressing Number Six back to school days, McKern addresses him as "Baker"...if that's of any help.

reply

Yes, I can confirm that McKern calls Six "Baker" in the penultimate episode.

reply

How can you 'confirm' this?

reply

Turning up the volume; listening carefully; watching McKern's lips. It is clear that he is not saying "Drake" or "later".

reply

Well, many others here have done just that and ended up with a different word, so that's not exactly 'confirmation', only your subjective opinion out of many others. Some say they've used the subtitles on-screen and the subs show the word 'later'. So apparently 'Baker' isn't necessarily correct.

reply

But well we know, subtitles (captions) aren't necessarily correct either.

No, so there's probably no satisfactory final resolution to this one--and PMG might have wanted it that way, even if it was accidental.
