Looking for the THEME song to N.Y.P.D.

Looking for the THEME song to N.Y.P.D. PLEASE someone help me.

I was 11 at the and still remember the Theme song. I always looked forward watching the show. Good background music and great plots. If anyone can tell me where to find the Theme song, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount.

Hi: I know this is of absolutely no help to you and doesn't answer your question--but I just want to say that I remember that theme song, too. It was great. I can hum it or play it on a kazoo, but I'm sure you can, too! I vaguely remember that as the music played (I recall it was a simple brassy sound, like maybe a trumpet or two) you would see the top of a speedng NYPD car with one of those old-fashioned single red "bubble gum" emergency light going on top. I also recall that this was the intro that was spoofed on the "Police Squad" series with Leslie Neilson. If you do find it on a recording, please let me in on it!
Regards,
Dave in Milwaukee (grew up in and around Queens, NYC).

This is a reply to a 4 year old post. So, if you receive it, I'd be very grateful for a response - and amazed.

Please le tme know if you were able to obtain a sound file of the theme music. I'd very much like to have it. My email is <[email protected]>

Try TelevisionTunes.com. The sound quality isn't that great, but it's the only place I could find it.

I have been looking for that snippet of music forEVER! I would greatly appreciate your sending it to me - as an e-mail attachment or any other way would be of least inconvenience to you.

Of course, as I'm responding to a 3-1/2 year old post, I be as amazed as I would be greatful if you respond to this.

There is someone in LA that has almost entire collection of NYPD (1967 Television Show) and is willing to make copies for other collectors. He is a little bit eccentric - no telephone or eMail - so you have to send regular mail. He is always looking for new collectors.

There are a couple of episodes available online via http://www.ovguide.com/.

I found it at www.SoundAmerica.com. It's under Tv Themes.

I reject your reality and substitute one of my own.

That was the sweetest minute I spent today, listening to that theme. I don't think I've heard it in 30 years... the power of the net!

reply

Amen my friend!

I LOVED that show --- I was about 9 or 10 years old and watched it all the time! I remember that it was on fairly late at night, so I would be watching it in bed. I loved the theme song, and the gritty look and feel of the photography. I lived in the NYC area, so it was especially exciting to see places on TV that I was familiar with because I had actually seen them.

Listening to that theme song took me back too!

Definitely needs to be on DVD!

If anyone has not checked YouTube already, a few subscribers have posted opens and a few episodes. As of this post, the site is not working but I'm sure if you type in "N.Y.P.D." or the following show titles (The Golden Fleece, Murder for Infinity, Candy Man: Part 1, Fast Gun, Naked in the Streets) on the YouTube's search engine, the videos, including the cool theme, should turn up.

Update:

WOW!!! I just listened to it at the SoundAmerica site. What struck me was how similar it is to The Time Tunnel theme as well, a little faster, maybe, but I wonder if both weren't written by the same composer? Both were 1967 productions so might be possible, eh? BTW that same site has TTT theme, also, though it's only 37 seconds or so.

Been a LONG time since I heard that NYPD one and that's another show I'd love to see out again. I wonder how well it would hold up 41 years later?

The theme for N.Y.P.D., which started in 1967, was by Charles Gross.

The theme for The Time Tunnel, which started in 1966, was composed by John (Johnny) Williams.

In addition the The Time Tunnel I too thought it sounded just like several other Johnny Williams themes..."Crisis" (AKA "Suspense Theater") as well as "Lost In Space" He's had an extremely prolific career http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002354

Charles Gross is listed as having supplied music for 4 episodes with no mention of the theme song which begs the question: Did he write the theme or just some incidental music? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0343343

Direct link to a good copy of the theme: http://www.televisiontunes.com/NYPD_-_1967.html#

Looking through the ASCAP database, Charles Gross (listed as Charles H. Gross) wrote the theme song as well as the show's various music cuts.

As far as Gross being listed on IMDb for just 4 episodes, I believe he should be listed for all of the episodes. As with many TV programs from before the 1990's, credits for "N.Y.P.D." is far from complete. Verifying credit information through recent airings on TV or on DVD is problematic since the show has not aired in at least 30 years. The 4 listed episodes have been shown on the net (YouTube) in the past few years.

Thanks for the help. (2+ years since you posted the info). The .wav file is still there... under "Themes"... then "TV"... then the letter "N"... then "NYPD67". Very cool to be able to hear this music again!

just listened to it on that sound america link. Pure Bliss. still sounds great. I worked in NYC very recently and i actually hummed the song in my head as i walked down the streets remembering the melody to a T from 40 years ago. Great to actually hear it again other than in my mind. The song catches the essence of the city perfectly.
