This show holds up very well!

I remember watching this show in reruns on Sunday mornings in the late 70's/early '80s as a kid. I liked it then, but was really into Bonanza at the time.

Watching it now on INSP, I think that it is better than Bonanza was during the same time period. It's unusual in that all of the lead actors never really were leads in any other series, but they were used as character actors A LOT. It's like it was an all-star character actor cast--but they played very well off of each other.

I have always had that contagious opening theme bouncing around in my head. It's awesome!

Same here and well said Fred. One last ep left of season 3 on INSP (Blue's art), I just hope they air the 4th season, probably after the new year since my guide is only showing re-runs from October now.

Excellent point on the show holding up some 45 years after the original run. As very young kid I remember a lot of the episodes in their first run. No doubt the show was fresh and hip back in the day and that carryover effect is still there in the reruns.

I have to agree that it has held up well all of these years later. The way in which it was shot is possibly the reason why. Much of Bonanza was shot inside on a stage.
On the High Chaparrel, those men got dirty! They were outdoors, and it showed. There was a lot of action too. I have to say that it was shot very well, and everything seems perfectly natural. That's why I think it holds up.

OP's right! The theme is contagious!
Think Telstar, by the Tornados....
That's another thread. You all can find that somewhere around here on this board. LOL!

I saw all the episodes of this series when it was new, on prime-time network tv, and liked it very much. I have not seen it since then. I have no further point to make; I just felt like saying that.

The High Chaparral is the best of the old westerns!

Just started watching this. Had never heard of this one before. I really dig it. It's a lot like Bonanza. But it feels a bit more realistic, like lived in and dirty. Everybody's sweaty, it looks properly hot and miserable. But the same colorful palette and big adventure feel. And you still get goofy buffoonery. It's a lot of fun.

Loved this show as a kid.

I was surprised to hear on the "Get Back" TV special that the Beatles watched it. (Was it on in England?) Paul was writing the song "Get Back" about Jo Jo leaving his home in Arizona, and asked if Tucson was in Arizona. John said yeah, that's where they film "High Chapparal".
