songs

First let me say that I LOVE the music from this show. Season one had at least 7 songs and they were all great. Sally Field can fly and sing, too!

So I just bought the second season. The first episode had a song in it, but for the next disc and a half it's been totally song-less. I was wondering, does anyone know whether they kept going with the whole singing aspect of the show for seasons two and three?

The singing was initially supposed to be a strong element of the show. Sally Field released an album of songs to be used in episodes, and then two 45-singles after that (one with Sister Jacqueline and the Reverand Mother on back-up vocals!). But it turned out to be a concept they just didn't stick with. Incidentally, I read an interview with Sally on-line, she tells a very funny story about recording that album in Hollywood. She says, number one, that she wasn't paid any extra money for the singing (that was lumped together in her contract along with the acting) and that she often followed the Jefferson Airplane in the studio (once they finished with their session, it was sally's turn). She said the marijuana smoke was so thick she did more coughing than singing.

This show came out about a year after the movie "The Singing Nun" with Debbie Reynolds, so presumably they were trying to work with that a bit, since this was also a show with a bright cute young nun and children. However, they realized that they didn't really need the songs, so that was phased out after the first season.

Well, that totally stinks! Because I love THE SINGING NUN, and I have the pilot episode of THE FLYING NUN on VHS, and there were a couple of songs in it. It was so nice to see a happy convent, and to see young Sally Field as the nun, singing with children, teaching them lessons through song. It gives me such a feeling of contentment to be alive in this world. Why they thought that they needed to phase out such a charming element of the show, it makes no sense to me– especially since this was not your average sitcom.

It would've made perfect sense for this program to maintain the music, because it wasn't supposed to be a slapstick comedy – it was supposed to be a heartwarming family show with comedic elements. The producers of the show obviously didn't understand their own program! Either that, or they decided to sell out to the zaniness of the era, instead of sticking with the sentimentality that made the show special in the first place.

After all, what do cloistered nuns do? Well, a couple of things they do is pray and sing. Singing is a big part of church life. I mean, it's not for nothing that most of the family movies made about nuns have got singing in them.

Huge mistake on the part of the show, to phase out the music! Especially during the years that the show was made, when music sounded so sweet.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Was that that beautiful seashore song which blew the singers' minds? That was a horrible song but the remake was no better.
