Sambos restaurant

part of the enjoyment of watching Dragnet, Adam-12 is when they are out in the car driving around town and the different store chains you see in the background, todays MeTV episode there was a Sambos restaurant, had many a dinner there in the 70's I think i read there is one lone Sambos still in business today in California. (used to have over 1200 locations)

I remember them well, and know of a Denny's in Eugene, OR. near the U of O that started life as a Sambo's.
I went to our friend Wikipedia, and learned that the "lone Sambo's" fa6947 mentioned is the chain's original location in Santa Barbara, Calif.

(On today's 'Adam-12' episode, "Internal Affairs-Blackmail", 1971, there was a "Shopping Bag" sign, for a SoCal supermarket chain called "Von's and Shopping Bag"!)

I can't add anything about the restaurants, but I was so intrigued by a sign on a restaurant (seen from the car as the characters drove past) announced the performance there of a hypnotist. I noted his name and looked him up online. Sure enough, there was such a person who had minor fame back then for his act. I wish I could break myself of this little obsession of spotting businesses, actors, etc. in old TV shows and then researching them!

I remember Sambo's! I grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s. I love pausing Adam-12 when they happen to show a street sign or a particular store or restaurant and then Googling the location to see what it looks like now.

A few weeks ago, the officers went into a restaurant to find an old lady who had walked away from her retirement home. It looked like a Shakey's but no name was shown. I looked up the locations of Shakey's restaurants in the San Fernando Valley and found that they were indeed in a Shakey's on Laurel Canyon Blvd. in North Hollywood. I could tell because a store across the street had the exact same sign now as it did 40 years ago!

The original Sambo's on the Beach is alive and well. It is located at 216 West Cabrillo Boulevard, Santa Barbara CA.

I remember when Sambo's were everywhere. It is amazing to think they have gone from almost 1,200 down to just one.

If you are ever in Santa Barbara, stop at Sambo's to eat. They have a beautiful location on the beach and the food is much better than Denny's.

... the food is much better than Denny's.
I ate at a few of the restaurants while the chain was thriving back in the 70's. It was better at those also. Many of the old Sambo's were actually rebranded as Denny's when the chain fell apart.
