The Very Best Episode of Dragnet

Why don't they show dr-31 "Crimson Crusader" aka stanley Stover , This has to be the funniest episode of them all !

My favorite episode is "The Shooting Board." This is the episode where Sgt Friday goes into a laundromat to buy a pack of cigarettes and suprises a burglar slip-wiring a coin changer. The burglar fires first, missing Friday. Friday then returns fire killing the burglar. At first, there is no evidence that Friday fired in self-defense.

Hi altpensacola,

'"The Shooting Board." "My favorite, too."'

Got it. Thanks for your reply.

Best.

I liked ``The shooting board`` as well, great acting by Jack Webb, however, having just watched the Dragnet 1966, I would now say it is my favorite episode.

Hi uncg2002,

Got it.

Thanks.

I loved Homicide:DR-22 from Season 3, Episode 14.

This is the episode with Burt Mustin playing a retired cop. We don't know it until the end. He is a suspect for a lot of the show. I love Burt Mustin and this episode makes him shine. All the other episodes listed are good ones. I cannot think of one episode I disliked.

My favorite part of the show was when Friday would describe areas of Los Angeles before the the actual story would start.

reply

I agree, absolutely my favorite, and there are a lot of favorite episodes of this classic show.

reply

Me too, Burt Mustin just steals the show.
Maybe not all that hard to do. ;-)

I agree on "The Shooting Board" being one of the best ones. The first two years of the series were better and more dramatic than the last two. On a trivial note, wish I had that '64 Dodge convertible that the suspect & his girlfriend tore out of the back lot of the laundromat. Awesome wheels !

The Shooting Board is one of my favorites too.
The best episodes of this go around were the 1967s and many of the 1968s. By 1969 and the 1970 episodes had little action but lots of dialog. Many were outdated and this is especially true now after many more things were researched on marijuana. This reincarnation of the show also reminds me of trips back then when I'd go visit relatives in LA. I can still spot many familiar places.
About this episode, it's sometimes hard to picture that actor Michael Burns (Blue Boy) would go on to a distinguished career as a college professor. Its been proven that show business is not for everyone and can be hazardous to one's health, longevity and marital bliss.

That's a good episode. Where is that bullet?

reply

I loved "The Crimson Crusader" episode. Also, the "Blue Boy" episode ranks up there, too.

The Big High episode was hilarious. At the end, they showed the wife in a strait jacket- I loved it. Besides, after watching this episode, I was convinced smoking dope was a great idea. I mean, I didn't have any kids, so what could I lose. The Big Fur Burglary was great, too. The salon owner was way over the top. Friday and Gannon should have taken the free furs.

So, to sum it up in legal terminology: Get lost, you bum.

reply

I was eleven years old when "The Big High" aired. I think it's the most memorable Dragnet ever. People in my age group still talk about it.

reply

My fav is "The Big Prophet," where Friday and Gannon pay a visit to "The Temple of the Expanded Mind" and debate a cultish drug dealer over whether drugs should be legalized. Very well-written and acted, especially by Liam "Brother William" Sullivan. Surprisingly, both sides score points in the debate.

"The Shooting Board." Absolutely!

The Big High and Blue Boy - excellent episodes.

Definitely "Shooting Board" but their Christmas episode is great, too!

For the few who may not know, the quote should read "There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who know binary and those who don't.".

(10 is 2 in binary)

Yep, that's my favorite one, too.

Other top-drawer episodes (I'm not sure of the actual episode titles):

Lecture 131-A - Young suburbanites get wasted on grass, kid drowns in tub
Blue Boy - "I am the chair! I am the chair! I am the chair!"
Crimson Crusader - The biggest loser comicbook "fanboy" in the world steals superhero movie posters
Smart Teens - "I'm 15 years old, and I've tried pot"
Talk Show - Friday & Gannon appear as panelists on a political TV talk show
Dirty Hippies - Child neglect in a filthy house of drug-using drop-outs
Friday Goes To College - Sgt. Joe attends a community college course & interacts with the students
Dead Guy in Apartment Building - Investigating a murder, Friday & Gannon interview a weirdo from India who finds death "morbidly delightful"

My vote goes to "Who Killed Who?" Four men are shot dead in a boarding house, and there are no apparent clues. Eventually the mystery is solved; the identity of the killer is a surprise, and his motive is a masterpiece of irony.

Burt Mustin was awesome as Ret. Deputy Chief Calvin Lampey.

reply

Was "Who Killed Who" the one where Friday and another detective are examining a dead body and the guy tells Friday "He was hit in the face, with a hammer, six times! The first two blows killed him" and Friday replies "And the next four changed his personality."

reply

no, that one was where the landlord is killed with a hammer for rent money by a young boston hood and his girl friend/wife. when they're caught up she tells friday he's got nice eyes and he tells her, your mother must've had a loud bark.who killed who was during season four, about a tv.

Oh, by all means the funniest episode is "Vice" where Joe and Bill go "undercover" to a farming equipment convention hotel to bust an illegal gambling operation. Totaly hilarious from beginning to end with endless funny quotes.

"What are we celebrating?"
"A smile"

"Give me your gun. Slowly"
"I wonder how that got there?"

Chanin Hale is gorgeous and cute as the "lady" and Bill is awesome as the drink-buying dice playing "I'm gonna stomp on it" uh, farmer.

I agree with the Crimson Crusader but don't see it as funny at all. That acting by Tim Donnelly (who Webb would use again in Dragnet and cast as a regular on "Emergency.") was superb. He was so pathetic, so sad both in the squadroom and later when his mom was coming in his house and he wanted to become invisable.

And the wonderful subtle performance of the two leads was so enjoyable. Webb starts off obviously disliking the sheer stupidity of the suspect, but you see it change to true sympothy for this sad little man, someone who has been bullied his whole life.

Yeah, I didn't see it funny, just very well written, acted, and directed.
