Children's stuff ?

I had a hunch that this show was great even from the rotten copies that I had on tape before, but after watching those two DVDs and laughing my ass off I'm just struck by the fact that it was originally meant for children for Chrissake. Man, how smart were the children of that time ? And how smart were the programmers of that time, too, to have such a high idea of a show for children ?

Now I know that Terry Jones said that "we were just doing what we would have done anyway really, so the fact that it was a kids show was just an excuse", but it seems incredible that they could have it their way and be successful now that so many shows for adults don't pass 6th grade.

To be fair, some of the DNAYS sketches seem to be greeted by a baffled silence from the young studio audience. I get the impression it's more fondly remember by the adults that saw it, rather than the younger children.

Very few kid's programmes are genuinely groundbreaking and intelligent. Most (sadly) are tired and half-arsed. Honourable exceptions from my own childhood would include "Rentaghost" and "Gilbert's Fridge".

Apart from that, I preferred to watch late-night TV, and then talked about it with my mates in the schoolyard the following day.

someone offered to eric to do a children's show. It really was a show with eric's mike's and jonesy's humour without the nasty bits.
kids weren't smart then and they aren't smart now.

the annoying fish.

Of course, kids are spoon-fed crap 99% of the time. At least, until the police stop you.

I was a kid in the 1960's and this was my favorite show on TV. I suppose I was about 9 or 10 when I was watching it.
When I watch clips of it now on youtube I can't understand why I thought it was funny back then. This was the pre-humor established by the Pythons which people didn't find funny until the mid-1970's (and even then not everyone found it funny).
This humor was way beyond it's time, so back then it shouldn't have been funny, especially not for a child, but I really did enjoy it.

I was 10 when the first series was broadcast and I and my sister found it totally funny. Watching it was the highlight of our week. We understood the jokes and loved it. It was popular with all our friends too. It was kind of edgy and a lot more fun than Blue Peter.
