watching the dvds some comments.

I was 7 in 1967 and 12 in 1972 and remember seeing bits of CALLAN on tv,can't believe that my parents let me see it or that I got much out of it as a kid.

But I have seen some episodes more recently,or maybe the later film version so as a spy/crime fan I had to buy this.

It was very popular in its day and I can mostly see why.

Woodward is great in this, totally believable in the part, and good support from Anthony Valentine and Patrick Mower and all the people who played the often changing boss HUNTER.

I am amazed that I seem to remember some of the episodes, have I an incredible memory or have I seen more recent repeats,I don't recall repeats.

The whole tone of this is bleak,CALLAN lives in grotty flats and wanders round rough parts of London, there is no hint of Swinging London or glam rock 1970s London.

As often with tv shows of this era the scripts have references to events that people would recognise as current if they were fairly well informed.
I am not someone who says that things were always better in the past but there is a depth to these stories that is missing from most modern shows with car chases and glamour.

Watching old shows like this is also always interesting because you see lots of good acting from even the smallest parts.
