Are the American scriptwriters to blame?

Is the director swelled with his own pomposity?

Is the director's annoying wife playing too-annoying a character?

Is it half-an hour too long?

reply

It's 105 mins too long! Unfortunately a lot of films from this period have dated so badly they're now almost unwatchable.

Pomposity? Bryan Forbes made some great pictures in the 1960's, like Seance On A Wet Afternoon or Whistle Down The Wind that amply prove his standing as a master director. Comedy though may not have been within his comfort zone and it sort of does feel that way sometimes in this Box movie - the first half hour is particularly unfunny. From there on, things pick up though and I was ultimately close to giving this thing a 7/10 rating. Well, 6,5/10 = 6/10. Quite a likeable graveyard mess in the end. And again, Peter Sellers damn near stole the show with his cats. Definitely shoulda gotten more screen time (the same goes for Leonard Rossiter who appeared for about five seconds). As for the wife, Nanette Newman, she was very pretty and was on for too limited a time to be some notable annoyance.
