Where Is The 93 Minute Version?

Most film journals and a few (1966) reviews list the movie's running time as 93 minutes. Olive Films new Blu-Ray also states a 93 minute running time, though, like all the other home video releases I have seen, it clocks in at the usual 86. I can only speculate that the longer version was exhibited fr the critics before the picture's release. Then, for whatever reason, it was cut before it hit theaters. There was a short preface, warning patrons (who may not have noticed the poster or the film's title) that what they were gong to see may shock and/or offend them. That would have brought the running time to about 87 minutes. Olive just released ''Psych-Out'' in a never before seen 102 minute version. The theatrical release was just under 90 minutes, and the longest cut, from HBO?/CANNON home video (1986) ran 97. Both Olive, Kino Lorber and MGM have been pretty good about restoring the ''lost footage'' from old AIP films when they find it. So, most likely, any missing ''Angels'' trim's are long gone.

Yes, if there indeed was a 93 minute (or longer) version, it's probably long gone. That may have been the running time before it was released, or even screened for the critics. Running times are sometimes published well before a film is released-it's nothing new to note a discrepancy between the published and actual time a film clocks in at. I have always wanted to see the ''preface''. That's probably tucked away somewhere, maybe on the master print.
