I agree - I was recommended it by my dad and it really is a first rate movie.

this film shows the quality of acting by all the cast - and it was interesting to see actors of today at the early stages of their career (Margaret Tyzack for one)- but ALL of them were excellent and so believable in character. Post war London I think was used as some of the filming locations but the whole thing was redolent of that period in time. Great acting and Dame Edith Evans was absolutely superb. Highly recommended and one film I shall keep as a recording from TV

Hear hear. I hadn't ever heard of it. Not a cheerful piece, but terrific.

I find myself haunted by Edith Evans's performance in this. I've known she was a great actress since I first saw her in The Chalk Garden over 40 years ago. But I did not know how great. One of the best performances ever put on film.

I agree with you 100% I caught this movie a couple of years ago and managed to record it. I recently picked it up at Amazon on DVD. I've watched it countless times and never grow tired of it. Edith Evan's was definitely a very talented performer. I read that the Director was pleasantly suprised during the filming that she needed little direction. She immersed herself in the role and essentially became Mrs. Ross.
