What Edith Evans does in this film is extraordinary. Not only has managed to be utterly convincing, and moving as this poverty stricken woman, she makes the most interesting and revealing choices as an actress. I will never forget that scene where she finds the money - THIS IS ACTING!! Truly truly the greatest British actress of all time.
I totally agree. What a dame, that Edie! This was absolutely one of the saddest movies I have ever seen in my life, and I'm no spring chicken. It says so much about the loneliness and inherent risks of old age, as well as being a commentary on post-war England and the social services system (who are indeed portrayed as conscientious good guys here). The biggest shock for me is that I just discovered this film tonight on TCM, and, having no Tivo or the like, had to stay up till the wee hours to watch it! But it's unforgettable, with brilliant performances by both Edith Evans and Eric Portman.
I saw this also last night on TCM for the first time. What a haunting film. The acting by Edith Evans has got to be a gold standard of performing arts. Wow I couldn't sleep after! lol I'm still thinking about this film
