Cary Grant Is More handsome + Charismatic Than Jim Hutton

And that's the problem.

In "The More The Merrier" which is the original movie, the Cary Grant part was played by Charles Coburn who looked old and offered no possible romantic competition to Joel McRae, who was the original counterpart to Jim Hutton.

I couldn't help thinking that there might be some women who, given a choice between the 61 year old Cary Grant (who looked good for his age) and 32 year old Jim Hutton, might prefer Cary Grant.

Yeah, I kind of expected Christine to be tempted by William. I had to force myself to accept that William was merely playing Cupid for Christine and Steve. It was funny how William could casually tell his wife over the phone that he was living with a young woman and then not hearing an argument between the two of them

Each to her own, I guess.

Christine and I seem to have similar tastes in men.

I have never found Cary Grant to be attractive.

By the way, I should've clarified that my post wasn't about preferring Grant over Hutton (or anyone else in the role of Steve). It was more about being used to Grant's previous roles in which he "got the girl" so to speak (especially if his character met the girl first), combined with how he still had a lot going for him.

From what I've read Grant didn't think he had enough going for him at that age. It's amusing and bittersweet (and surreal at the end) that the script for Walk Don't Run pokes fun at that.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

reply

I understand what you meant. 

I was amused at how Cary Grant allowed himself to be poked fun of. ("I thought he was a relative!")  Clearly, he had a great sense of humor....

I just saw this thread today. I don't visit the boards for individual movies that much anymore.

Many women do consider Cary Grant to be one of the sexiest actors out there. I have never been attracted to him. I think that he was better looking in Walk Don't Run than in some of his early films.

As for Jim Hutton, he was a cutie in this film, but I think that he got sexier as he got older.

I've seen The More the Merrier a couple of times. Joel McRae was a hottie, for sure.

I like Jim Hutton an awful lot but honestly had a hard time not watching Grant the whole time! He didn't try to steal the scenes. I thought he down played very carefully but his charisma was still there. As was his good looks. I never wanted Grant to get the girl, mind you. I liked that Grant had a home to get back to but I still watched him closely.?

That might well be the understatement of the century Joe.

Jim Hutton had some comic smarts as an actor, but he was no looker, being somewhat weedy and lacking in charisma - especially when cast opposite someone as charming and handsome as screen legend Cary Grant. Funny enough, he was rather effective in Sam Peckinpah's flawed but fascinating, sprawling western MAJOR DUNDEE - in which his scrawny physiche, nerdy, dweeby looks and fairly high pitched voice made him an effective foil to his tough, rugged looking and extremely masculine co-stars.

I disagree. I think Jim Hutton is quite handsome. Even my mom thought so. She actually commented about Jim's good looks before Grant's. xD

I don't disagree about Hutton's "[dweebiness]," but personalyl I thought that was part of the charm that made so funny and likable.
