I just saw this film the other night for the first time (and a very good one all the way around, I must say!), but even though I saw his name in the opening and closing credits, I failed to notice Dabney Coleman in the movie. Can anyone tell me anything about the role he played (Salesman) that might help me out here?

I watched the film very very carefully and didn't see him in any scene.

I will have to go back to look and tell you for sure where he was but I believe he is in the scene where Alva comes downstairs in the morning and all the workers have gotten their pink slips from Owen. Dabney was on the phone apparently trying to get a job or make plans. He is probably in other scenes as a worker or a boarder but I recognized him on the phone from his voice which I think is distiinctive.
shareYou have to remember that in 1965 he looked nothing like he did in later films that he is more famous for (like Tootsie and Nine to Five). In 1965, he was only 33 and still had a full head of dark black hair and no mustache (which became his iconic look later on). Watch the episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour called "Dear Uncle George" with Gene Barry to see what he looked like in the mid-sixties.

After watching this twice on a DVD, I repeatedly fast-forwarded to EVERY scene in which 'extras' or multiple people appeared in the scene, or every scene in which a 'salesman' (Coleman's credited part) may appear (ice cream scene, train ticket counter scence, party and dinner scenes, etc) slowing down every scene over and over to see if any of the young guys in the car or people at the party looked like Dabney Coleman. I am convinced that his scenes were cut yet they left him in the credits.

What about Robert Blake? I saw his name in the credits but could not detect him in the film either.

Robert Blake has a big role. Sydney... I think Willie calls him "Sindy" by mistake when he aln Alva walk through the door after the birthday party was in full gear. They just didn't care to shoot the scene again I suspect. She says "Hey, What's the matter with Sindy" and Alva says "Nothin' that stickin' his head under the faucet wouldn't solve"
Natalie was dreadfully scared of water as we all know, so when it came time for her to jump in "skinny-dippin'" Robert Blake was waiting under the water and out of sight to catch her by the legs in an effort to make her less afraid. You can see a look come across her face as she landed in the water..

He's in numerpus scenes. He's the one that has tears running down his cheeks when he gets a pink slip (I felt so bad for him).

I agree 100%. I have watched this movie on many occasions, and I'm always on the lookout for Dabney Coleman as "salesman," and he's just not there. His scene may have been cut after the credits had been prepared.
shareThis is weird. I first saw this movie many years ago and I thought he had a scene on the telephone in the boarding house. It is so strange, I can picture him in a suit talking on the phone with a suitcase/sample case beside him. But I just watched and rewatched the DVD about 4 times zooming through and do not see that scene.
I wonder if it has been cut for some reason or am I placing him in the movie from something else?

Not only is Dabney Coleman credited, but not in it, but Robert Random is also credited, but does not appear anywhere in the film. I suspect there is a scene involving both of them that ended up on the cutting room floor...

shareRobert (Bob) Random is in the ice cream-in-the-face scene. Lindsey/Lindsay (Lin in IMDb's credits) addresses Tiny (Robert's character). He might appear elsewhere, but this scene especially identifies him.

I think that COLEMAN'S role as a 'salesman' was at the end which unfortunately ended up on the cutting room floor. In the final cut that we've all seen the last time we see Alva is when she's running in the rain after Hazel/Mama has ruined her chances with Owen after revealing that she's already married to J.J.
In the original screenplay however there was a scene which takes place after that showing Alva at a train station looking for a man (paying john) to pick up. COLEMAN played that guy.
