Where can I get this?

Hey all,

I'm a New Zealander and a big fan of the book. I've never had a chance to see the movie though, anyone know where I can get hold of a copy?

Cheers.

It appears to have been available around 2003 and subsequently deleted. I too am looking - it is a great film for what it is. A real time capsule and lovely film. If you find a copy let me know as I'd love to borrow it :)

I picked it up yesterday from JBHiFi here in Melbourne. You can shop online from them at

Scored a copy this mornig for $6 at Big W. If I can get it here in the Outback, it should be easy in a big city.

I also got it from JB-Hifi in Newcastle, but those internationally can order it online from EzyDVD:

It's 18 months on so you probably have found it by now.

I picked it up about 3 years ago at EZYdvd (this company has now gone belly up). I've seen it around the traps as mentioned BigW, JB's, Sanity/HMV.
Online searches are the best.

Big W is a department store here (not sure if you have it there). They should do international sales but I am not 100%.

Hello All,
I'm a yank and have been dying to watch this in it's entirety. I've seen bits and pieces on my visits to NSW but cannot find a copy for region one (North America). Does anyone know if it is only region 4?

Hello Walter,
It's not only available in region 4, but it's not available in region 1.

There's a region 2 DVD available in France http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B002IWF17U/papas011-21. That has Fixed French subtitles. No extras, not even scene selection. Just the option to start playing the film.

The Region 4 DVD is by far the best one. It has the normal DVD menu, a picture gallery and a documentary "The Story of The Making Of They're a Weird Mob"

But don't let the DVD regions limit you. They are of dubious legality anyway. They are a restraint to free trade and all the countries involved have signed up to Free Trade agreements like GATT.

Some "region free" DVD players are available, even in the US where you have the additional problem of playing a PAL format DVDs in your NTSC format. But "region free" DVD players do tend to be a bit more expensive and often the sales people aren't keen on telling you about this feature because they mistakenly think it's against the law. Do some research on the web to hunt around for "region free" DVD players

Other DVD players can be reprogrammed via the remote control. You tap in a magic code via the remote control and suddenly your DVD player will play DVDs from a different region. Again, this isn't usually mentioned by sales people so do a bit of research about this one as well.

But the easiest way is just to play the Region 4 DVD in your PC or laptop. The DVD players in computers will play DVDs from any region in PAL and/or in NTSC format. The only thing to watch out for there is that if you use Micro$oft's Media Player then that will let you play a certain number of DVDs and then lock you in to a single region. But that's only Micro$oft's Media Player doing that. It's not the DVD drive itself that imposes that lock.

So if you get a decent Media Player, like the VLC Media Player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ then you can play DVDs from around the world - like the rest of us.

And you are also helping to break Micro$oft's monopoly so it's a win-win situation

It's also part of a Powell & Pressburger set, which isn't that expensive. The added bonus is you get to see some very good films.

Yes, the 11 DVD boxed set (Region 2)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000HRLWR6/papas-21
49th Parallel (1941)
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)
A Canterbury Tale (1944)
I Know Where I'm Going! (1945)
A Matter of Life and Death (1946)
Black Narcissus (1947)
The Red Shoes (1948)
Tales of Hoffmann (1951)
The Battle of the River Plate (1956)
Ill Met by Moonlight (1957)
They're a Weird Mob (1966)

Not as many fancy extras as there are on the better DVDs like the Criterion ones but this set is a great introduction to some amazing films
