Why isn't this film among the IMDB's top 250?

Tanin no kao is one of the finest Japanese films ever made. The cinematography, score, and script is perfect. Highly underappreciated.

I know this reply is pretty late, but I totally agree. Watched this recently on a British DVD release and absolutely loved it. The score is fantastic. The film reminds me very much of 'Les yeux sans visage' - another favourite of mine. It's a shame that this film hasn't gained much recognition on the IMDB, but I must say I wasn't completely familiar with it until its recent release in the UK. Hopefully, this new release will help it gain a much neede recognition. I was just wondering if you had also seen Teshigahara's 'Pitfall' and if so what did you think? It's also available from the same Collection, the link is below if you're interested?

Definitely. I was able to get a copy off of Super Happy Fun, and this film is now in my top twenty of all time.

I want to see Woman in the Dunes, another Teshigahara film rumoured to be excellent.

I can say the rumours are true "Woman in the Dunes" is a fantastic film by Teshigahara. I found "Woman..." better than "The face of Antoher" although both of them are superb.
The least you can say about Teshigahara films is that the director gives them a unique touch. "Pitfall", "Woman in the Dunes" and "The Face of Another" all have this sort of surreal, sci-fi(not in the obvious kind of meaning), scary kind of elements in them. Theses three movies show very much existentialism influences (What is the meaning of life, Who Am I, What I am doing here...).

I would strongly recommend "Woman in the Dunes" for those who like "The Face of Another"!

Because most people who visit this website are 14-year-olds or have the sophistication of one. Seriously, "Crash" is in the top 100 if that tells you anything.

reply

Absolutely true. But I would say that about 60-70% is justified of being in the top 100.

Tanin no Kao has actually been released, but not Moetsukita Chizu, his fourth film (just after Tanin no Kao). It looks like a wonderful, surreal, existentialist, 100 per 100 Teshigahara film. Let's hope it's released too!

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!

I just saw this on TCM and was pretty amazed. It has such a bizarre style, kind of like a more surreal Hitchcock. I definitely have to check out this directors other work.

Hey, that's not fair. I'm 12 years old and I love "The Face of Another" as well as other Japanese New Wave films (especially "Bara No Soretsu" a.k.a. "Funeral Parade of Roses").

reply

it should not enter there as it is really a bad film. the characters just talk about social and psycological matters but none of the scenes justify the big words uttered by them. the style is very pretentious and unable to fill these words. yes it was bizarre but also it was boring as hell with no point watching on and on. if you want to see bizarre and great films, watch seijun suzuki films.

This movie is not eligible to be on the list because it has less than 600 votes, and the minimum is around 3000. I don't quite think it's one of the best 250 movies of all-time, anyways. Yeah, it has a cool plot and the last scene kicks @ss, but it dragged a lot, too.

A movie that should definitely be in the top 250 (it's in my top 10) is Woman in the Dunes. Watching that one is like visiting a dreamland. It's visually perfect and has a nice screeching classical score.

I just saw the film tonight on the big screen, and I was completely amazed the entire time. I thought it was an excellent character study, particularly because I don't think I've seen any other character study tackle the same issue. Truly a frightening idea! I thought it was a wonderfully made film. This weekend they'll be screening Woman in the Dunes, but unfortunately I won't be in town to check it out. That's another I'll have to check out, as many tell me it's up there, if not better than Face of Another.

reply

It would be if it didn't have so less votes.

In my opinion, "Pitfall" was masterpiece, "The Woman in the Dunes" was also pretty good, however "The Face of Another" doesn't seem to live up to its predecessors. It has some good themes, but they don't seem to develop enough, not to mention that completely separate tale that doesn't stick properly to the rest of the movie. Sure, it's worth a look, but I would rather comment a French movie "Eyes Without a Face" (1960) with a similar theme.
