He claimed he wanted to be a 'real actor', but mostly did crap like this, maybe at his manager's orders. And he mostly partied during filming, instead of preparing. I read he was very disappointed with Hollywood, but the results were likely his own fault.
He wanted to be 'Jim' in Rebel Without a Cause, but Col. Tom demanded too much money for him. On TMC, they said James Dean actually directed the movie. He knew exactly what he wanted it to be. I doubt if Elvis could have done the job as well.
