Emmanuelle Arsan

the Asian prostitute. The actress was originally Thai and was ethnically half French. She was famous as the writer of the original Emmanuelle books and the film and many sequels. Never really acted much after this, only in one of her Emmanuelle films.

In the quite wonderful commentary of this film in the DVD version, neither Robert Wise, Richard Crenna, Mako or Candace Bergan ever mentioned this interesting bit of trivia about this actress (at least I don't recall them mentioning this). Why?

These people were elderly (all have since passed on except for the still lovely eternally young Candace) so I thought this might have embarrassed them. but it seems a bit strange. would love to hear opinions about this.

Marayat Andriane (as she was known at the time the film was made) was quite lovely in the film and I thought very effective in her protrayal of Maily. Ms. Bergen does say something about how she was a little intimidated by her because she seemed so sophisticated and intelligent and even a little aloof. But no mention is made about her career after the film.

Those SAND PEBBLES commentary tracks for the DVD were recorded almost 40 years after the film was made. The movie itself was shot years before Emmanuelle Arsan's books had been published. Maybe none of the DVD commentators ever connected the Emmanuelle stuff together with the actress Marayat Andriane -- whom they had worked with ONE time, 40 years earlier. (And by the way, the SAND PEBBLES character "Maily" was not a prostitute.)
