Does The Iron Giant (1999) reference this film?

There's a striking similarity between the third act scenes with the boy/s about to fall from a high point being rescued by the Tall Russian/Giant Robot relieving the towns people's tensions and endearing them to the alien.

I think it's homage, but could be a coincidence... both are great films with similar overall sentiments.
