We need a remake of this: The Terrorists are Coming!

I wish Jewison would remake this film retitled as "The Terrorists are Coming!" Substitute Arabs for the Russians, get a good writer to update the script, and you'd have an instant classic.

"So you think 9/11 was funny?"

No dwendt, I think conservative America's paranoia over it is.

dwendt, you're still funny as ever. We have freedom of speech in Britain (something you learnt from us), and can talk about any damn' topic we please, just as you can.

Terrorism isn't funny - but the USA supported it for years, mainly against we British (not the US government in this case) but also in other countries (the US government, often when trying to destabilise a government it did not approve of). This is documented fact, as I'm sure you know. I have no doubt, incidentally, that the UK has done its share of the same. However, it has suffered far more terrorist acts than the US.

Maybe it's the shock that the US is not as impregnable as it thought that is part of the problem? The Cold War wasn't especially funny, either, but Jewison made an interesting commentary on it. However, given the hysteria in both of our countries about terrorism, maybe we could all use a laugh about it. We might even learn something.

Your visa application form, which is virtually identical to the UK one, is as good for a laugh as ours, dwendt.

Both have a question which, rephrased slightly, boils down to:

"Are you now, have you ever been, or are you planning to become, a terrorist?"

Like anyone - let alone a terrorist - will ever answer "yes!"

This is, unfortunately, a fact. Maybe neither the Brits nor the Yanks have anything to feel superior about?

What we learned freedom of speech from Brits???

I think not,

That was one of the reasons why we owned you guys like 230 some odd years ago.

Please use proper English grammar. Against we? No it's against us.

I don't know, Catma. You could have a storyline where the Americans are trapped on the island by a storm which stops the ferry service. An Iranian sub strands itself, the "terrorists" topple the cellphone tower, etc...

A great satire could still be made of American hyper-patriotism and overall hysteria over the "terrorists".

LOL at those who somehow don't think terrorists aren't planning new ways to attack the US (and other nations). Should we be paranoid? No. But we should be vigilant and understand the reality of the world. Terrorist plots are broken up all the time. Radical Islamists routinely declare their intent to kill us. So it's a little disingenous to assume there's no terrorist threat just because we've been kept safe from terrorist attacks since 9/11. Look what's happened in Europe.

So, while a comedy can be made about the Russians (who never planned to invade the US) during the Cold War...I just don't think you can pull off the same kinda thing with suicide bombers, hijackers, etc. Just my opinion.

I think that when this film first came out there were people who despised it and everyone involved in the production. The fear of communists taking over the US from the inside out were equally as bad if not worse than any fear of terrorists today. This film would've been viewed by some as left wing communist propaganda.

As for pulling off a remake where terrorists are portrayed, I dont think anyone is suggesting such a thing. But I think the basic theme of jumping to an absurdly wrong conclusions about the arrival of certain strangers because of a political tensions can and has been done relatively recently. Harold and Kumar 2 Escape from Guantanamo Bay is an example.

Maybe the end could be that we realize that we are the terrorists...

We are the terrorists.

Canadian Bacon isn't too far from what you're suggesting.

As an American, I feel that there are few things in this world more frightening than a bunch of Americans who have been fearmongered into a frenzy. And also few things more irrational.

The lesson of this movie is, governments, the media and corporations (especially arms manufacturers) have one agenda, and actual human beings have another agenda. I don't think we really need to remake the movie to learn that lesson. This discussion seems to indicate that the lesson is still clear enough.
